Visit us in 2010 and join in our celebration of local and seasonal food.
Food Glorious Food is the theme of a range of events and activities taking place
at National Trust properties across the country to celebrate the experience of
growing and tasting local and seasonal food.
This year we have decided to have a go at growing our own vegetables at Fountains
Abbey, and show how even the smallest garden can be used to produce great tasting
fresh food.
Our gardener Steve has started work on our new vegetable plot in the restaurant
garden last year and the once bare patch of land has been transformed into a productive
area.
Throughout the year there will be food activities and events to get involved
in:
• On Monday 31 May you can receive free packets of seeds and tomato plants* and get top tips at
our ‘Meet The Gardener’ event. There will also be the chance to have a go at growing your own seeds
throughout the day.
• Once you've had a go at growing your own vegetables we want to see how you've
got on. From Monday 31 May, upload your funny veg photos onto the website and
be in with the chance of winning a prize!
• Sunday 20 June sees Scarecrow Making at Fountains. Bring your dad along on Father's Day this year to make your own
scarecrow for your veg plot. Once you've made your scarecrow why not treat yourself
to a tasty burger from the BBQ at Swanley Grange.
• Discover more about bees and honey on Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 August when there is the opportunity to meet the experts at our ‘Bees at Fountains’ event. Meet at Swanley Grange 10.30am-4pm.
•
Dine with the Deer Warden on
Friday 24 September & Friday 1 October and learn how we manage the deer herd and produce good quality free range venison.
Then enjoy a tasty two course meal in our restaurant. Please book by calling Sally
Morris on 01765 643198 or emailing
sally.morris@nationaltrust.org.uk
• On
Saturday 25 September take part in our
Autumn Forage. Learn about the different edible wild foods on the estate and then enjoy a
tasty meal in our Visitor Centre Restaurant. Limited numbers, please book by calling
Sally Morris on 01765 643198 or email

Each week there will be the chance to observe the work in the vegetable plot
and get tips from our gardeners and volunteers who will be happy to answer any
questions you may have.
