Visit us in 2009 and join in our celebration of local and seasonal food.
Food Glorious Food is the theme of a range of events and activities taking place
at National Trust properties across the country to celebrate the experience of
growing and tasting local and seasonal food.
This year we have decided to have a go at growing our own vegetables at Fountains
Abbey, and show how even the smallest garden can be used to produce great tasting
fresh food.
Our gardener Steve has started work on our new vegetable plot in the restaurant
garden and over the next few months the bare patch of land will transform into
a productive area.
Throughout the year there will be food activities and events to get involved
in:
• On Saturday 23 May at 11am and 1pm you can receive free packets of seeds and get top tips for growing
your own at our ‘Meet The Gardener’ event. Meet at the Vegetable Plot behind the restaurant.
• Also during the May half term children will be able to take part in drop-in activities in Swanley Grange
and follow a Food Glorious Food trail around the estate.
• Fountains is joining in with the national ‘The Big Lunch’ campaign on Sunday 19 July. Bring a picnic and enjoy live entertainment as you enjoy sitting down and eating
together, something we don’t do often enough!
• Discover more about bees and honey on Saturday 8 & Sunday 9 August when there is the opportunity to meet the experts at our ‘Bees at Fountains’ event. Meet at Swanley Grange 10.30am-4pm.
•
Dine with the Deer Warden on
Friday 25 September & Friday 2 October and learn how we manage the deer herd and produce good quality free range venison.
Then enjoy a tasty two course meal in our restaurant. Please book by calling Elizabeth
Bielby on 01765 643198 or emailing
elizabeth.bielby@nationaltrust.org.uk
• On Sunday 11 October take part in our Autumn Foray. Learn about the different edible wild foods on the estate and then enjoy a
tasty meal in our Visitor Centre Restaurant. Limited numbers, price Ł16.

Each week there will be the chance to observe the work in the vegetable plot
and get tips from our gardeners and volunteers who will be happy to answer any
questions you may have.
