Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is a special place, loved for generations.
It is a place of calm reflection, of delight and exploration for those who come
to discover it now and in the future.
Taking the Pleasure Gardens of 1781 as its core and inspiration, the site possesses
many layers of an extraordinary history that has shaped
The Abbey, the parkland, the Skell Valley, the rural setting, and extended further afield
to other landscapes.
The Vision for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is for it to be a place where
all the elements of the World Heritage Site can be enjoyed by everyone whilst
maintaining the spirit of place and conserving its peaceful beauty.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal will be a place where supporters, stakeholders
and communities can;
- strive to conserve and enhance the historic and natural environment to exemplar
standards,
- understand and demonstrate sustainable management, adapting to the challenges
of climate change and valuing the historical, cultural and natural significances
of the site and its setting in the wider landscape,
- celebrate and share the estate’s wonderful stories, participate in research and
engage in opportunities for everyone to access and join in activities on the site
through volunteering, learning and activities,
- work together with neighbours, the local community, heritage, environmental,
economic and educational partners, regional and national government and UNESCO
to raise its profile in the region, country and worldwide, enhance its position
in Yorkshire’s economy and ensure it remains a place to be valued and enjoyed
by all.
